Burg battles Minford to the end

The Pirates can’t seem to find breathing room on their schedule, and such was the case again as Burg found themselves in a crucial battle against SOC foe Minford last Friday night. For once, the air felt cool and crisp, perfect weather for a high school football game.

Marred by frequent yellow flags on both sides of the ball which basically hindered the flow of the game, the Pirates were able to come away with an all important conference victory against the falcons.

Minford came into the contest with one of the top offenses in the area. Their big play capability was evident immediately as Minford running back Wiget found a hole and bursted towards the end zone. It looked as if he was going to score rather easily but Senior Makaya Matthews caught up from behind and stripped the ball, resulting in a turnover as the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.

For the next quarter in a half, penalties plagued both teams as neither could get going offensively, but the scoring drought finally ended as Evan Horsley threw a pass just inside the free safety to Makaya. Makaya broke free from the first tackle and it was a foot race to the end zone.

Minford would close the gap in the third as Risner found a pass from his QB and took it the distance. The PAT was wide left.

Burg put a nice drive in the second half and scored late in the fourth quarter as Matthews scored for the second time and punched it in from 7 yards out.

Minford wasn’t going out that easy as they marched right down the field and watched Ty Wiget score from 8 yards out. Minford had to go for the all important two point conversion to force overtime. They pulled out a trick play from their back pocket as Vogelsong-Lewis handed off to Wiget only to get it back on a flea-flicker type play. Vogelsong-Lewis instead of passing it, ran into the end zone to tie up the score. Burg couldn’t get into field goal range as time expired and overtime ensued.

In overtime, both defenses couldn’t keep each other out of the end zone, but Minford wanted to win it out right and not force a second overtime, so they chose to go for the final two points.  Minford showed their hand right before Coach Woodward called timeout to allign his defense. Minford came out and ran up the gut. They were denied at the one yard line, allowing the Pirates to seal the victory.

Burg will travel to Oak Hill for another SOC showdown. Let’s get there and shake the jugs!

Go Pirates!
