Burg puts up big numbers in win at Oak Hill, Focus on Waverly
The Pirates probably had a couple of check marks they wanted to check off their list when they went into last Friday’s contest against Oak Hill.
One of the items, to mark off the list, would be could the Pirates get physical enough to stifle a down hill running game. Oak Hill rarely throws the ball, mostly they run right off tackle using their strong line to protect their backs. Pirates not only checked that off the list, they completely dominated the line of scrimmage on the defensive side of the ball. Oak Hill was only able to rush for 71 yards the entire night.
Another mark needed to be checked off was being consistent in moving the ball without turnovers or penalties. Senior QB Evan Horsley was called upon to provide some experience for the Pirates. The Burg amassed over 400 yards and lit up the scoreboard with 55 unanswered points. Evan Horsley accounted for all but two scores by either running, or passing the pigskin. Senior Corey Maxie and Sophomore Aaron Masters finished the night off in scoring.
The (4-3) Pirates now shift their focus to the ever so dangerous Waverly Tigers and their explosive offense. Waverly is putting up vast numbers by spreading teams out and getting their skilled kids in space. Pirates have faced two teams with similar styles in Minford and Greenup County. The Pirates were able to come out with wins in both of those contests. In order for Burg to keep Waverly from gashing the defense, the Pirates will have to play sound assignment football and tackle extremely well in open space. Shoemaker from Waverly is one of the best running backs in Southern Ohio. If you don’t get him down the first time, chances are you won’t get a second time. Waverly also has a talent at the QB position. Shanks is a dynamic passer. He’s a dynamic runner too but he’s been hampered by injuries. One things for certain, he throws very good balls, and the Pirate secondary will have to account for all receivers.
It’s homecoming! It’s at the Ed. It’s for the SOC! Time for Pirate Nation to get behind the team and cheer on a victory. Shake a Jug! Let’s Go!
Go Burg!
